This release from the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra's archive pays tribute to two iconic works from the French symphonic repertoire of the late 19th century: Cesar Franck's Symphony in D minor and Claude Debussy's Nocturnes. Franck's only symphony testifies to grandeur and French elegance, while Debussy's Nocturnes capture the special atmosphere of the night with all its twilight colors and movements. In the remastered concert recordings from 1991 and 1983, legendary conductor Sergiu Celibidache interprets the two masterpieces with all their drama and finesse.

Maria Herz, née Bing, was born in Cologne in 1878. By the 1920s, she had become recognised as a dynamic element of the contemporary music scene. New music’s ‘chief theoretician’, Theodor W. Adorno, became interested in her works and their style, which was rooted in late Romanticism and aimed at Modernism by way of Expressionism, New Objectivity and Neo-Baroque, all the while retaining its playful, charming air.

Viola de Hoog: I have often wondered which of the “great spirits” might provide a new impulse and a different direction for what we call classical music in this early part of the twenty-first century. Narratio Quartet have been immersed in all of Beethoven’s string quartets for over fifteen years now. We experience time and again how Beethoven explored and then overcame the limits of the Classical style and the instrumental difficulties that were prevalent at the start of the nineteenth century. What we hear has been enriched by the passing of two centuries and the gaining of wider experience. Progress indeed, might be your first thought, but perhaps we have also lost something along the way?

Multiple Grammy nominee John Di Martino - composer, arranger, pianist - has recorded many albums for Venus Records with his Romantic Jazz Trio. Noted for his versatility, John has performed and recorded with such notables as Kenny Burrell, James Moody, Joe Lovano, David "Fat Head" Newman, Pat Martino, Paquito D'Rivera and Houston Person. John has been described as a "shape-shifter", for his creativity across musical genres. Here the trio devotes an entire album to jazzing up music by the classical composer Frederic Chopin.

Raul Barboza is a great poet of the Chamame music, coming from the north-east of Argentina which creates a synthesis of guaranis inspiration and accordion brought by the european migrants.

In 1955, Louis Armstrong, along with vocalist Velma Middleton, got into the studio to pay tribute to the late Fats Waller. All the standards are here: "Honeysuckle Rose," "Squeeze Me," "Ain't Misbehavin," rendered in fine and mellow but gently, genially swinging fashion. Armstrong's trumpet is superb and his voice carries the good-time spirit of Waller's music.

"Last Night on Earth" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the sixth track on their 1997 album, Pop, and was released by as its third single on 1 July 1997 by Island Records. The song features excerpts from "Trayra Boia", written by Naná Vasconcelos and Denise Milan.It's music video was directed by Richie Smyth and filmed in the US.

Born in Brussels in 2020, The WIG Society (TWS) has rapidly grown into one of the most exciting musical ensembles on the European Early Music scene. As a rising ensemble within the EEEmerging+ programme, TWS has developed an original approach to the chamber music of the galant and classical period. Their playing highlights the lavish, extravagant, and witty elements of a repertoire principally designed to entertain an aristocratic society on the decline. They re-imagine rococo ballrooms and salons as contemporary dance floors, Haydn as the Beyoncé of the 1770s.

Andrey Gugnin presents a wonderful all-Grieg recital, the elegant neo-classicism of From Holberg’s time (a rare and welcome opportunity to hear the original version for solo piano) contrasting with the brooding magnificence of the Ballade. Two complete sets of Lyric Pieces—those most perfect of piano miniatures—are also included.

Among the first releases on the Hallé recording label, established in 2003, were Elgar’s Symphonies Nos 1 and 2. This recording revisits those works nearly 20 years later, and mark the culmination of Sir Mark Elder’s tenure as Music Director The First Symphony was premiered in the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, in 1908 by the Hallé and its Music Director, Hans Richter to whom the symphony is dedicated. It is a work of astonishing musical and structural mastery which was greeted with worldwide acclaim, receiving one hundred performances in its first year. The musical material demonstrates Elgar’s skill at melody and transformation and presents a wide emotional range.

I first met Win Pongsakorn when he was a student at University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Austria where I was teaching Jazz Composition and Arranging. I remember hearing him for the first time and realized how he has blossomed over the years. Win has a warm, soulful sound and, on this recording, the solo lengths are just right.

Bruckners 1. Sinfonie entstand in den Jahren 1865/66, als der Komponist am Linzer Dom als Domorganist angestellt war. Uraufgeführt wurde das Werk unter seiner eigenen Leitung am 9. Mai 1868, einige Monate bevor er nach Wien übersiedelte. Die Aufführung, die übrigens von Bruckners späterem Feind Eduard Hanslick durchaus positiv rezensiert wurde, geriet zwar zu einem Achtungserfolg, konnte allerdings für die spätere Laufbahn des Komponisten nichts bewirken.
